Safeguarding begins before an activity, not after harm is reported. Roles, consent, supervision, data handling and referral routes should be clear from the start.
Who this protects
This commitment applies to children, young people, survivors of violence, people seeking legal or administrative support, people facing identity exclusion and anyone whose circumstances increase the risk of retaliation, stigma or exploitation.
Expected conduct
Staff, volunteers, facilitators, partners and media contributors should treat participants with dignity, avoid sexual exploitation and harassment, respect boundaries, use non-discriminatory language and never exchange assistance for personal or sexual benefit.
Children and young people
Activities involving children need age-appropriate information, safe supervision, appropriate caregiver consent where required, child assent, controlled photography and a clear response route. A child should not be asked to disclose a traumatic experience for publicity.
Photographs and stories
Consent should explain where an image may appear and whether it can be connected to a name, quotation or sensitive topic. A group-event photo should not be captioned in a way that assigns a private experience to someone shown.
Raising a concern
Anyone may report unsafe conduct or a safeguarding concern. Send minimal necessary information to info@kituochahaki.co.ke, state whether someone is in immediate danger and identify the safest reply method.
Response principles
Immediate safety comes first. Information should be shared only with people who need it to respond. The person complained about should not control the review. K-HAKI should document actions, protect against retaliation and refer specialist matters responsibly.
